The Grace of God our Hope and Strength

September 12, 2021 | Gary Jackson

Passage: Exodus 33:12-23

Intro – What is God’s Grace

         Bob Diffinbaugh said:

….Most Christians suppose they know all they need to on the subject. A major factor in this misconception is that quick and easy definitions have been given for grace. Grace, we all know, is God’s unmerited favor. In acrostic fashion we have been taught to define grace as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense … GRACE. This simply inadequate. ……

  1. God’s Grace cannot be earned

Where can it be found?

13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

  1. In Who God is

         Bob Diffinbaugh said:

Grace is a part of the character of God. Grace is most frequently spoken of as         a commodity, that is distributed, and such it is. But first and foremost, grace       is a description of the character of God, which is displayed by His gifts to men.       God is a God of grace, and He desires to make this known not only to men,          but also to the angelic hosts.

  1. In What God has Done – Saving Grace

Acts 15:7-11 (KJV) 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose      up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while        ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear        the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts,          bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And         put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10        Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the   disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we          believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved,        even as they.

  1. I. Packer describes grace this way:

“What is grace? In the New Testament grace means God’s love in action          towards men who merited the opposite of love. Grace means God moving heaven and earth to save sinners who could not lift a finger to save     themselves. Grace means God sending His only Son to descend into hell on      the cross so that we guilty ones might be reconciled to God and received into    heaven. ‘(God) hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

  1. In What God has said

  1. What God said in the Garden – He would send His son to pay our sin                     debt

  1. What Jesus said from the Cross – Father forgive them for they know                     not what they do

  1. What the Holy Spirit was sent to do in the world  - draw all men to                        Jesus

  1. The Grace of God will guide us in our life

13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. 14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

shew me now thy way…….. AND HE SAID My presence shall go with thee

  1. Forgives our Failures

Exodus 2:11-15 (KJV) 11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was   grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and      he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he   looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he     slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. 13 And when he went out the    second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to       him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? 14 And he said,       Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as      thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is         known. 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But      Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he       sat down by a well.

  1. Strenghtens our weaknesses

Exodus 3:7-11 (KJV) 7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of    my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their          taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them         out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the     place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the   Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the         cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the     oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore,   and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people      the children of Israel out of Egypt.

11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and    that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

  1. Opens great Opportunities

To lead a great Nation “God’s chosen people to a land of milk and honey”

8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land        flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the    Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the    Jebusites.

III. The Grace of God will give us Rest

21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: 22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

  1. Presence there is a place by me

  1. Provision I will put thee in a clift of the rock

  1. Protection will cover thee with my hand

We find our strength in HIM - shalt stand upon a rock

  1. The Grace of God is yet to be fully understood

Exodus 33:23 (KJV) 23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

1 John 3:1-3 (KJV) 1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Series Information

Paul's favorite church may have well been the church at Philippi. He shares three things that are encouraging to him and should be part of our life. He first give Thanks - there is always reason for the child of God to give thanks. Secondly he prayers. We must always pray one for another. Three Paul is confident that God will complete the good work He has started in our life.
