Strength in weakness

Series: Topical

Strength in weakness

May 23, 2021 | Brent Long

Passage: 2 Chronicles 16:9

Certain books of the Bible tend to have reoccurring themes.

Numbers – complaining

Deuteronomy – remembering

Psalm – praise

Proverbs – wisdom

Philippians – joy

Kings and Chronicles seem to have a focus on the theme of strength

This makes sense since they are evaluating the kings of Israel and Judah

A king is the strongest person in a country

There are strong kings and weak kings

Strong kings can either use their strength for good or evil

How would you define strength for a king? What makes a king strong?

Peace and prosperity

Peace from wars within and outside the borders

Prosperity of well-being and wealth

Tonight, you may not be a king of a nation but you are the one making decisions for the course of your life.

How do you define your strength? What makes you strong?

Is your life defined by peace and prosperity or turmoil and devastation?

We will be looking at several kings to see what brought them strength or caused them to lose strength.

We can learn from their mistakes and duplicate their wise decisions.

2 Chron 14

:2 – Asa did right

:6 – peace

:7 – prosperity

:9 – 1 million Ethiopians came to war with Judah

:11 – Asa prayed and relied on God for help

:12 – “the Lord smote the Ethiopians”

:15 – brought back sheep and camels in abundance

2 Chron 15

:1-2 – Azariah spoke to Asa

Lord is with you while ye be with him

If ye seek him, he will be found

If ye forsake him, he will forsake you

:12 – entered covenant to seek the Lord with all heart and all soul

:13 – they killed anyone that would not seek the Lord

You should cut off any friendships that are going to hinder your walk with God

:15 – sought God with whole desire

God was found with them and gave them rest until his 35 year as king

2 Chron 16

Asa – Ramah – Baasha - Syria

Baasha – king of Israel started building at Ramah to cut off travel to and from Asa in Jerusalem

Ramah was near the border of Judah and Israel

Asa sent money to Benhadad, king of Syria, to attack Israel from the north

Syria attacks Israel and they stop building at Ramah

:7 – Asa relied on Syria for deliverance

:8 – Asa got deliverance from Ethiopians with he relied on the Lord

:9 - God’s eyes are looking for people with a right heart to show Himself strong

God can only be shown strong in a people that rely on Him

:10 – Asa threw the prophet in prison and oppressed others that agreed with him

Society today is trying to silence those that don’t agree

:12 – 39th year of reign, Asa became sick

Asa didn’t seek the Lord but only the physicians

Asa died 2 years later

Doctors can’t bring healing to your body, only God can

Doctors can help but God is the only one that can heal

Ex 15:26 - And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

2 Chron 20:12 - Jehoshaphat

Jehoshaphat had no strength and no plan

God’s eyes are looking for someone to look for Him

The eyes of Jehoshaphat looked up to turn to the Lord

When their eyes met, God had the opportunity to show Himself strong

:15b – “…for the battle is not your’s, but God’s.”

2 Chron 26:5, 15-16 - Uzziah

:5 – “…as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper.”

:15-16 - Uzziah was marvelously helped by God until he relied on his own strength

2 Chron 27:6 - Jotham

Jotham became mighty because he prepared his ways before the Lord

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – when I am weak, then am I strong

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Eph 6:10 – be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might

Tonight, you may not be a king of a nation but you are the one making decisions for the course of your life.

Where are you turning to find your strength?

Are you relying on yourself or on God?

Are you depending on your resources or on God?

Are you relying on your own logic or on God?

Are you depending on your bank account or on God?

Are you relying on your employer or on God?

Are you depending on your efforts or on God?

Are you relying on your doctor or on God?

Is your life defined by peace and prosperity or turmoil and devastation?

Is God your first line of defense in time of need or is He your last resort in desperation?

The sign of a person who depends on the Lord is a person who prays often.

Prayer should be common place for the believer.

Coming to the altar is not for drastic Job moments but also for simple everyday needs

We need to depend on God more than what we even realize

Take these closing moments to turn to the Lord for the needs in your life
