Sleeping well during tough times

January 10, 2021 | Brent Long

Passage: Jeremiah 31:25-26

Have you ever had a night where you couldn’t get a good night sleep?

Have you lost sleep thinking about the corona virus?

Have you lost sleep over the news of current events?

Have you lost sleep due to anxiety and worries?

2020 has been a crazy year and 2021 hasn’t exactly gotten off on a great start either.

Why do we see the problems we are seeing in culture today?

We are beginning to see the result of a culture where God is stripped out of society.

It’s been 58 years now since the Bible and prayer have been taken out of the public schools. Our culture is becoming more and more Bible illiterate.

The God of the Bible is the source of morality in our culture. We are seeing moral decay in America as our culture is pulling away from God.

Morality is absolutely necessary for freedom to be possible in America.

Laws don’t make people moral.

Laws punish immoral people that break the laws.

The more immoral people become, the more laws that are broken

The more laws that are broken, the less the people can be trusted.

The less people can be trusted, the stricter the laws become.

The stricter the laws become, the more freedoms we lose.

So, the solution to keeping our freedom is by maintaining a culture that has morality.

Morality only comes from a right heart that is selflessly caring. This kind of heart is only possible through God changing someone’s heart. God first changes someone’s heart when they are convicted of their sin, confess their sin to God and ask Jesus Christ to save them. At that point, God’s Spirit dwells in their heart that changes them from the inside out and causes people to repent of their ways.

How should a Christian react to the chaos in the world?

Romans 12:17-21

Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The battle in our culture will not be won by hatred, heated arguments, riots or force. Instead, we need to overcome evil with good, love our enemies and reach people with the gospel of Christ. America doesn’t need a revolution, we need a revival!

Spiritual revival will be the preservation of our freedom in America.

It might help to take a break from social media and the news. Media outlets are all about ratings and they know negative news will draw more traffic to their site than anything else. Don’t be ignorant of what’s going on but don’t be consumed by it.

The battle in our culture will be accomplished by reaching each individual with the gospel of Jesus Christ and God changing their hearts to love as He loves. This will take a mighty act of God that won’t happen over night.

So, how do we cope with all that is happening around us now?

The title of the message: Sleeping well during tough times

The Bible gives us 3 principles on how we can sleep well at night regardless of our circumstances.

  1. Keeping sound wisdom will give a good night sleep
    1. Proverbs 3:21-24 - My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
      1. Wisdom can only come from God when you listen to and obey God’s voice.
        1. Applying wisdom in your life will help you sleep well at night
          1. Must keep your eyes focused on God’s wisdom all of the time
            1. Applying wisdom is not a switch you turn on and off, it’s something you apply to your life 24/7
            2. All it take is just one brief moment of weakness to make a bad mistake that can ruin your life
          2. Wisdom is life to your soul, grace to thy neck
            1. Energizes from within and adorns from without
          3. Wisdom gives guidance
            1. Keeps you safe from stumbling blocks
            2. You won’t need to be afraid
  • Wisdom is seeing the problem ahead to avoid it and not suffer the consequences
  1. Working hard will give a good night sleep
    1. Ecclesiastes 5:12 - The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
      1. Jesus was busy about His Father’s business
        1. John 9:4 - I mustwork the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
      2. We must also be busy about our Father’s business
        1. Reach the lost, restore the fallen, reinforce the faithful
        2. What are you doing to help someone else take their next step towards Christ?
        3. How is God using you to disciple someone else?
          1. We need to be looking for ways for God to use us to minister to the spiritual needs of others.
          2. Would you consider your life dedicated to laboring for the cause of Christ?
  • We also need to be productive in temporal things
    1. One defining character trait of a Christian should be a hard worker
      1. 2 Thes 3:10 – For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
      2. 1 Tim 5:8 – But if any man provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
      3. A full day of hard work will leave you tired and ready for bed at night
      4. The feeling of accomplishment is sweet when you lay your head on your pillow.
    2. Turn to God for satisfaction in your soul for a good night sleep
      1. Jeremiah 31:25-26 - For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.
        1. Every person has a soul that is constantly longing to be satisfied
          1. The things of this world will only satisfy for a fleeting moment
          2. God Himself is the only One that can truly satisfy our soul
            1. Do you have an authentic relationship with God?
              1. This is much more than just being saved.
              2. This is much more than just reading your Bible as a check list.
  • This is much more than serving in ministry.
  1. Some call if devotional time, quiet time, Bible time, prayer time…
    1. This is an encounter alone with God
      1. The goal is not just to read the Bible but to personally know the God of the Bible
      2. The goal is not just to pray to get things off your mind but to pour your heart out to God
    2. Be rooted in the Word of God and in prayer. Anchor your heart and soul in the loving stability of your heavenly Father. God is the source of love, joy, peace, comfort.
  2. When you get ahold of God and God gets ahold of you, your sleep will be sweet.

Conclusion:

How are you sleeping at night?

  • Are you living a godly life according to God’s wisdom?
  • Are you working hard for the Lord and in all areas of life?
  • Have you turned to God as your source of stability and satisfaction in your soul?
