Prayer Our Most Powerful Weapon

April 18, 2021 | Gary Jackson

Passage: Psalms 102:1-28

Some say there are 650 prayers in the Bible

Bible records Jesus praying many times throughout the Gospels

Note the KJ heading

A PRAYER OF THE AFFLICTED, WHEN HE IS OVERWHELMED, AND POURETH OUT HIS COMPLAINT BEFORE THE LORD.

            David when being pursued by Saul

            Naomi lost her husband and sons

            Hannah wept for a child

            Jeremiah wept for Israel

  1. Note the ADDRESS – 102:1
  2. From Anonymous Person but not unknown (Knew Lord) The Lord is equally committed to each of His children – we need no special ministry nor talent – those are His anyway!

            Casting Crowns Lyrics

"Who Am I"

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name,
Would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart?

Not because of who I am,
But because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading:
Here today and gone tomorrow.
A wave tossed in the ocean,
A vapor in the wind.
Still You hear me when I'm calling.
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling.
And You've told me who I am.
I am Yours, I am Yours.

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me?

Not because of who I am,
But because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading:
Here today and gone tomorrow.
A wave tossed in the ocean,
A vapor in the wind.
Still You hear me when I'm calling.
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling.
And You've told me who I am.
I am Yours.

Not because of who I am,
But because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading:
Here today and gone tomorrow.
A wave tossed in the ocean,
A vapor in the wind.
Still You hear me when I'm calling.
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling.
And told me who I am.
I am Yours, I am Yours, I am Yours.

Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?
'Cause I am Yours, I am Yours.

  1. Prayed to LORD ALONE – How Jesus taught the disciples to pray

            Isaiah 63:5 (KJV) 5 And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it    upheld me.

            Psalms 86:10 (KJV) 10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things:

            thou art God alone.

            “Peace doesn't come from finding a lake with no storms. It comes from having Jesus in     the boat.”   - John Ortberg

  1. Note the ANGUISH 102:2-11

Psalms 102:2-11 (KJV) 2 Hide not thy face from me

in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me:

in the day when I call answer me speedily.

            A. The agony of being afflicted in health. 3-6

                        3 For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.

                        4 My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.

                        5 By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin. 6 I am like a                           pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.

  1. The Agony of being alone  7

                         7 I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

  1. Agony of being afflicted by enemies (often that were “friends”) 8-9

                        8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are                              sworn against me. 9 For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with                             weeping,

  1. The Agony of hopelessness 10-11

                        10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me                                                up, and cast me down. 11 My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am                             withered like grass.

Article in Psychology Today

“The emotional pain that heartbreak evokes is excruciating. Nothing else matters, no one else matters. We can barely function, think, or move. We feel removed from everyone and alone in a haze of unreality, trapped in our shattered world. All we can see is the person who broke our heart, and all we can feel is terrible pain.

What we want most is for the pain to ease, to stop hurting so badly — but that is not what our mind wants.

When our heart is broken, our mind has a very different agenda than we do. As a result, it ends up deceiving us and making things worse. If we want to stop hurting and move on, we need to know when NOT to trust what our mind tells us.”

BUT we are NOT ALONE!!

Psalms 121:1-3 (KJV) 1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my    help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not        suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Proverbs 18:24 (KJV) 24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly:

and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

12 But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever;

and thy remembrance unto all generations.

13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion:

for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones,

and favour the dust thereof.

15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD,

and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

16 When the LORD shall build up Zion,

he shall appear in his glory.

  1. Note the ATTENTIVENESS of Our God 102:17-22

17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute,

and not despise their prayer.

18 This shall be written for the generation to come:

and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.

19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary;

from heaven did the LORD behold the earth;

20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner;

to loose those that are appointed to death;

21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion,

and his praise in Jerusalem;

22 When the people are gathered together,

and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

  1. He will be Aware of our need

            17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

            18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be             created shall praise the LORD.

  1. He will look down

            19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD             behold the earth;

            May I remind you God looks down with compassion!

  1. He will hear

            19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD             behold the earth;

            To hear with an understanding !

  1. He will proclaim

            21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;

            22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

  1. Note the Assurance from Our God 102:23-28

23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. 24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. 25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. 26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: 27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. 28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

  1. God will not change – the God that saved me will keep me

            27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

  1. God will not forsake me

            28 The children of thy servants shall continue

  1. God will be the same for the generations to follow

            28 …… their seed shall be established before thee.

NOT IS AN HOUR OF CRISIS??

“The reason why many fail in battle is because they wait until the hour of battle. The reason why others succeed is because they have gained their victory on their knees long before the battle came. Anticipate your battles; fight them on your knees before temptation comes, and you will always have victory.”

  1. A. Torrey

Series Information

Paul's favorite church may have well been the church at Philippi. He shares three things that are encouraging to him and should be part of our life. He first give Thanks - there is always reason for the child of God to give thanks. Secondly he prayers. We must always pray one for another. Three Paul is confident that God will complete the good work He has started in our life.
